    rock climbing

continuing with the trend of using groupon, i had seen one for outdoor rock climbing and decided to buy it. i asked sal and jenn to buy it also since theyve been climbing indoors with me before. i was super excited to finally (!!!) get to go outdoors. jenn couldnt go with us but sallys friend who is also now my friend (its facebook official) john came alone with us.

not gonna lie…all week i was stressing about this trip. what if i hated it? everyone that i climb with told me that theres absolutely no way i would hate it….but who knows right?!

sally and john drove from la to pick me up then we headed to sd.

here we are at mission trails regional park. we got here pretty early since sal needed extra time in case she got lost. the good news is we didnt. the bad news is we had 30+ minutes to kill.

so sally posed with the bobcat. very sexy sal

we climbed with a guide from front range climbing company. our guide, diego, was absolutely amazing. hes been climbing for about 17 years! definitely a good person to go climbing with if you’re inexperienced.

the hike up to where we were going to climb was pretty steep. i think the hike is the hardest part for me because im so, so afraid of heights. its ironic that i feel fine climbing a 50 ft wall but cant hike up (or down) a mountain. weird.

i think by the time we started hiking it was about 9:15 or 9:30. already getting pretty warm…and unfortunately when we got up there a lot of the (easier) routes were already taken. we kept walking and finally settled into the climbing area called “limbo”.

this was our wall. we had two topropes setup….one on this side, which was a 5.7 and then one on the other side which was a “5.7”. the other side was just a very large crack and very few features. i thought it was a lot harder than a 5.7…or 5.10. took me forever to finish the climb on the other side. this one was great though.

    look at sally go :)

johns life is in sallys hands right now….seriously.

john at the top of the crack climb. he didnt get to go onto the other side but he did this one twice!

so diego told us about this other climb that was on the face of the rock. one of the other climbers in our group was going to try it so i figured i would give it a try too! it was quite ambitious….this climb was a 5.11d and i’ve only ever done up to a 5.10a. so i set my goal at reaching the halfway point.

fail. hiding my head in shame :( so close. took a break then tried it again.

made it! (yay!!) i couldnt go any further because i couldnt figure out the next move and i wanted to give the other climber a go before we had to leave. still proud of myself for doing it…i didnt think i would make it.

diego doing the climb that i couldnt.

we definitely had a lot of fun climbing. i have bruises and scrapes to show for it.

after we left, we drove to the counter in carlsbad to eat. john and i have never been there before, but sal has.

i cant even remember what i had on my burger. it was huge!

and last but not least. i got a pretty disgusting tanline from my sports bra. but it doesnt beat sals.

hope it was worth it! :)

    san diego

so dj and i had taken a trip down to san diego because I had purchased a groupon to go snorkeling (actually, I had purchased the groupons…without me dj probably wouldnt do anything). since we were there, we decided to stop by and see jenn for a bit…its been a while since ive seen her.

i cant remember the name of the place we went to for sandwiches…but it was yum! i think it was called com pane? as we were leaving, we saw across the street a sign that said “chocolates”. we were immediately drawn in. turns out the place makes truffles so we bought 6 pieces and shared.

delicious looking no? lets see if i can remember what they are. starting from the top left corner going clockwise. rose champagne truffle, expresso truffle, whiskey truffle, sea salt truffle, green tea truffle, lavender truffle.

we also got a frozen hot chocolate. it was yum.

thanks jenn for taking us “around sd”. haha

so for this week’s project, we were to shoot simple objects. this was easy because i shoot flowers all the time! took this picture while we were at my sister’s place. we played “jenga”. that’s in quotations because my sister decided she wanted to save money and got the generic version instead…which is called jumbling towers by the way. you could tell its a cheapie version because the blocks don’t fit right.

    anyways, heres the picture!

i had a busy, busy day today. some friends and i made plans to go kayaking in la jolla since we got a great deal. so i dragged dj with me so that we could make use of our zoo membership since we’d already be in san diego. kayaking was so much fun…jenn and sal probably agree :) the bad thing is that i dont have any pictures because it would be pretty amazing if i could kayak and take pictures at the same time. i have lots of pictures from the san diego wild animal park though! so onto that we go….

finally there! it was so chilly while kayaking…but nice and sunny at the park. i was pretty excited since ive never been to the wild animal park. (sidenote. not a good idea to go anywhere that involves lots of walking after you’ve kayaked for 2 hours. apparently youre more tired than you think)

going on a safari! the hats make it official.

im pretty sure this is a toucan.

    crowned crane.

blue macaw. love the color of the bird…its so bold! the macaw almost looks fake…but its real.

hehe these macaws are hanging upside down and “kissing”. very cute.

so dj and i were very tired from kayaking. so we decided we would go on the journey into africa tour which is included with our membership (saves money…and a great way to see the animals without walking). one of the great things about the wild animal park is seeing the animals in a somewhat natural environment. its nice that they have so much space to run around in.

im pretty sure this is a deer. we werent on the tour yet…so i cant be sure.

remember from my zoo trip i showed you the lesser flamingos? well these are the greater flamingos…gonna be honest and say that they look pretty much the same to me.

rhino. i think this one is called the black rhino. yes, its not black. but i dont name the animals…i just attempt to take pictures of them.

i think this is a heron of some sort.

i think the tour guide said this was a gazelle. to be honest, the gazelles, antelopes, deers, etc. etc. all look the same to me :( and it doesnt help that they like to all be in the same general area…

bison. the tour guide said they are the second most dangerous animal in africa. the first? the hippo of course. anyone who has watched congo knows that. haha who remembers that movie?

giraffe. not as fun as seeing them up close and feeding them.

pelican feeding another pelican. kinda cool and disgusting at the same time.

zebras. they get their own area because apparently they are very territorial and get agressive/harrass the other animals if they are in the same area. who knew?? they looked so nice and friendly.

    lazy cheetah.

lazy rhinos. everyone gets lazy when its hot…

super lazy lion!!! can you believe its sleeping on the car? how cute is that??

thats the end of our safari adventure. until next time!

sorry i havent posted in so long…i was really sick two weeks ago and then last weekend i had a big wedding. it was worth it though…everything came out beautifully :) i wish i had pictures to show you but i was too exhausted to so we’re just going to have to wait for the pro pictures.

anyways, time to go back to roofus. he got a haircut…it makes him look like a puppy.

still doesnt like looking at the camera.

so our new project for the week is light. interpret that as you wish.

i haven’t had the time to go out and take a lot of pictures yet, but i wanted to show you a picture that i took a few weeks ago. i did flowers for an “Alice in Wonderland” themed shoot and i wanted to bring my camera to take pictures of the flowers. the photographer for the event, kimLe pham, and her assistant were so great! they gave me some great advice for picture-taking and even let me use some of their stuff :) for this shot, i had one of those light reflecting things. it seriously blinds the model because it’s so bright, but the lighting you get is amazing!!!

our model was super gorgeous. i loved the flowers for this shoot….which i’ll post another time. in the meantime, you can see the photos from the shoot that kimle did on style me pretty!!

every year, the company i work for does the California Coastal Cleanup. if you’re not involved in it, you really should try it out. it’s really fun and rewarding! work events are nice because they let me bring my camera to take pictures of everyone. its nice to document our accomplishments. there’s also been a small baby boom amongst the coworkers who i’m close to and since i love kids, i can’t resist taking pictures of them when we’re together!

and unlike sal, i asked for permission before taking pictures of their kids and posting them.

    so cute

isn’t this the most precious picture?? so much love. <3
